Home Sweet Rice is an interactive, site-specific audiovisual installation made in partnership with The Association of Rice University Alumni & artist Yi Luo. Premiering in the Moody Center for the Arts, the installation physically engages the viewer with the thoughts, words, and emotions Rice University alumni used to summarize their experience at Rice.
Words and phrases crowdsourced from social media are projected onto the screen along with the generated silhouettes of the viewers who stand in front of the display. Through their projected simulacrum, the viewer can touch, move, and break the words, resulting in a scattering and a scrambling of letters.
I developed and coded Home Sweet Rice with Processing and Microsoft Kinect. Input video from the Kinect are filtered and processed in order to create the silhouettes that are fed into a custom physics engine where the words are constructed.
